Embroidered patches are a versatile option when direct embroidery is not ideal or when you want a consistent design that can be applied across many different items. Clever Orchid designs, digitizes, and produces custom embroidered patches at our Devine Street studio in Columbia, SC — from single one-off patches to team and club batch runs.
From artwork to finished patch
Every custom patch starts with your artwork, logo, sketch, or even a rough description. Shirly digitizes the design specifically for embroidery — adjusting fine lines, text, and color transitions so the patch stitches cleanly at the size you need. You approve a digital proof before any thread runs, and for larger orders we produce a physical sample first.
Backing options for every use case
Not every patch gets used the same way, so we offer multiple backing styles. Sew-on backing gives the cleanest edge and the most durable attachment — ideal for uniforms, motorcycle vests, and items that see heavy wear. Iron-on backing uses heat-activated adhesive for quick application on jackets, tote bags, and hats. Hook-and-loop Velcro backing is the standard for tactical, military, and law-enforcement uniforms where patches need to be swapped in the field.
Common patch projects
- Business logo patches for staff uniforms, hats, and jackets
- Scout troop and achievement patches
- Motorcycle club and riding group patches
- Tournament, event, and fundraiser giveaway patches
- Chenille letterman-style patches for varsity jackets
- Memorial, commemorative, and in-memoriam patches
- Tactical and morale patches with Velcro backing
Border and shape options
Patches can be finished with a merrowed border (the classic raised-thread edge), a hot-cut edge for custom shapes, or a laser-cut edge for intricate outlines. Standard shapes include circles, rectangles, ovals, and shields — but custom die-cut shapes are available for logos and mascots that don't fit a rectangle.
In-house attachment
Already have patches and need them applied? We attach patches to jackets, vests, uniforms, bags, and gear on commercial machines with thread matched to the garment. Every patch is pinned in place for your approval before stitching — see our sew-on patch attachment service for details.
