Custom patches are an effective way to add logos, unit identifiers, and personalization to jackets, uniforms, and gear. They are widely used by law enforcement, fire departments, military units, Scout troops, motorcycle clubs, and corporate teams.
Clever Orchid Embroidery designs, digitizes, and produces custom embroidered patches at our Devine Street studio in Columbia, SC. We also attach patches to garments in-house — sew-on, iron-on, and Velcro-backed. Here is what to think through before starting a patch project.
Backing types: sew-on, iron-on, and Velcro
The backing you choose determines how the patch attaches to the garment and how easily it can be removed. Each option has trade-offs.
- Sew-on patches: The most durable option. The patch is stitched directly to the garment, making it permanent and resistant to pulling, snagging, and repeated washing. Ideal for motorcycle vests, varsity jackets, and any item that sees heavy daily wear.
- Iron-on patches: Heat-activated adhesive on the back allows quick application with a heat press. Convenient for lightweight jackets, tote bags, and hats — but not as durable as sew-on for items washed frequently or worn in rough conditions.
- Velcro-backed patches: Hook-and-loop backing lets the wearer swap patches in seconds. This is the standard for tactical, military, and law-enforcement uniforms where identifiers change based on assignment, rank, or event. The garment needs a matching loop panel sewn on.
Not sure which backing to choose? Bring the garment to your appointment and Shirly can recommend the best option based on fabric weight, how often it will be washed, and whether patches need to be swapped.
Sizing and design considerations
Patch size affects readability, cost, and where the patch can physically fit on a garment. A 3-inch round patch works well on a sleeve or chest, while a large 10-inch back patch makes a statement on a motorcycle vest or varsity jacket. Fine text and thin lines need enough patch area to stitch cleanly — if a logo has small details, sizing up or simplifying the design may produce a better result.
Every custom patch starts with artwork — your logo, sketch, or even a description. Shirly digitizes the design specifically for embroidery, adjusting line weights and color transitions so the patch stitches cleanly at the size you need. You approve a digital proof before any thread runs.
Border and shape options
The border finish affects both the look and durability of the patch edge.
- Merrowed border: The classic raised-thread edge seen on most uniform patches. Clean, professional, and durable.
- Hot-cut edge: A heat-sealed edge for custom shapes — circles, shields, or logos that do not fit a rectangle.
- Laser-cut edge: Precision-cut for intricate outlines. Works well for detailed silhouettes and mascot shapes.
Standard shapes include circles, rectangles, ovals, and shields. Custom die-cut shapes are available for logos and emblems that need a unique outline.
Placement and garment considerations
Patches are typically placed on shoulders, sleeves, chest areas, or backs. Each location has different considerations for visibility, comfort, and how the garment drapes. Shoulder patches on a thick jacket behave differently than chest patches on a lightweight polo — fabric weight, seam proximity, and garment stretch all matter.
During your consultation, we pin every patch in place on the actual garment for your approval before any stitching begins. This is especially important for departmental patches that need to follow specific placement regulations.
